Hensley poured a glass of wine and plopped down on the sofa. “I hate paperwork.”

“Not my thing either.” Brent leaned back and rubbed his temples. “How’d Maverick take the news about Opel Spa and Harlow Land Development?”

“Well, his exact words were, that fucking bitch.”

“I guess he and his ex-girlfriend ended on pretty bad terms.”

“I’d say about as equally bad as me and Ryan. Perhaps even worse. If I cross paths with her, she will want to run because I’ll hurt her.”

“Wow, marking your territory.” Brent arched a brow. “I thought you were never going to get involved with another man again. You said we’re all a bunch of liars and snakes.”

She lifted her glass and stared at the red liquid, recalling the conversation. She’d been at her lowest. Devastated from the divorce. From being left with nothing. Not even her trophies. Ryan had taken everything. The only man in her life that had ever been there for her had been her dad and all he had to say was I told you so.

Brent had walked into that bar and gave her a safe, nonjudgmental ear. But he was still a man. She might have shared her sorrow and took his friendship; however, she always waited for him to disappoint her like everyone else.

He never did.

He’d been a good friend. And now he was in love with her best friend. She could trust him with anything.

“Maverick came out of nowhere,” she said. “I’m in over my head and I don’t know what to do.”

“When that happens, there is nothing to do but let it happen, or run.”

“Trust me, I’ve thought about the latter. But here I am, sitting on his couch, drinking his wine, knowing that I’m going to spend the night here and that scares the crap out of me.”

“Why? Is it because of his ex?”

“I wish it was. Being jealous would be a good excuse. But she’s not my competition.”

Brent leaned forward. “You say that as if there is something else standing in your way.”

She set her glass down. “There is.”

“Are you going to make me play twenty questions, or are you going to tell me?”

“If I tell you this, you can’t ever tell Maverick. Some of it isn’t my story to tell, and I feel like I’m breaking a confidence.”

“My lips are sealed.”

“Maverick is a family man. His parents and his brothers are the most important things to him in this world. He’d do anything for them. He left the military for Leanne because he wanted to start a family with her, but she destroyed that when she lied about having a miscarriage and instead had an abortion.”

“Jesus, that’s cold.”

Tears burned at the corners of Hensley’s eyes.

Brent rose and moved next to her, wrapping his arm around her, pulling her close. “Come on, that’s nothing like what happened to you.”

“Isn’t it, though?”

“It’s nothing like it. Ryan didn’t want you or the baby and he made that clear. He wouldn’t have been there for you or that child. You did what you had to under the worst of conditions.
